Video on E-Paper: The First E Ink Panel with 60 Hz

The new “Paperlike 103” monitor from Dasung is the first to achieve 60 hertz on an E Ink panel. Although limited to grayscale, it enables smooth video playback comparable to LCD.

Chinese supplier Dasung has announced the first E Ink monitor with 60-hertz, according to the Chinese magazine Sina. This monitor, called “Paperlike 103,” achieves a refresh rate comparable to slower LCD panels, enabling smooth video playback on an E Ink panel for the first time. This marks a significant advancement for e-paper technology, which was limited to displaying static content until now.

In Dasung’s portfolio, there’s already been a color E Ink monitor with a 33-hertz refresh rate. The upgrade to 60 hertz, however, was only possible with a grayscale panel at the moment. According to IT portal Golem, another remaining challenge is the pixel response time, which is much slower than that of LCDs, causing visible streaks.

The monitor features a 10.3-inch screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1,874 x 1,404 pixels. It includes a capacitive touchscreen and physical buttons along the edges. Like all e-ink panels, it is reflective, eliminating the need for a backlight and allowing for easy reading in direct sunlight. In low-light conditions, a small front light automatically turns on to enhance legibility.

The Paperlike 103 will initially be available exclusively on the Chinese market for the equivalent of around 265 euros.

New refresh rates, new sizes – e-paper development is moving fast

The 60-hertz panel is not the only e-paper innovation making headlines this month: a few weeks ago, E Ink revealed its first 75-inch color display. Suppliers like Dynascan already plan to showcase digital signage displays featuring this panel at ISE in Barcelona, set to take place in less than two weeks.

Only a year ago, the largest e-paper display showcased at ISE was 42 inches, and moving images were not even part of the discussion. How this rapid porgress was possible and what can be expected from E Ink this year will be one of the topics discussed during the DSS ISE e-paper panel, where invidis will welcome E Ink’s CTO Ian French on stage.
