Pillars of Art: Art Meets Data

Rome | It’s the papal election in Rome, and 135 eligible cardinals are gathering in the Sistine Chapel. Between the ballots, conclave participants have ample time to admire Michelangelo’s world-famous ceiling paintings. Just a taxi ride away at Fiumicino Airport, airline passengers can also admire classical art. But it’s not the ceiling that captures admiration and attention – it’s the LED-covered Pillars of Art.

Rome Airport is considered one of the best in Europe, regularly awarded five stars. From a digital signage perspective, Rome FCO would even deserve six stars. With the exception of Singapore Changi, there is probably no other airport in the world that offers such entertaining digital signage as the Italian capital.

invidis reported recently about the 600m² LED display in the check-in hall. In cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Culture, the hub of the Lufthansa subsidiary ITA Airways presents famous Italian art on LED pillar wraps in the terminal.

The “Pillars of Art” art concept aims to break down barriers to historical art. The digitized works of art are presented on five LED pillars in the waiting area, complemented by understandable explanatory texts. This opens up art and history to a wider audience. New works of art are regularly presented – not only on LEDs but also originals in special areas.

The Art of Waiting

From a digital signage perspective, however, the integration of art and departure information is impressive. Temporarily the pillar LEDs are also display departure information merged with classical art. FIDS meets art – an innovative signage concept with an education and entertainment purpose.
