Gas Station: Discount With Style

Reykjavik | Iceland’s gas station market is on the move – market leader N1 is challenged by new-entry discount chain Orkan. With popping colors, hip cafes, services, electric charging points, and large LED price displays, Orkan attracts customers and sets new standards.

Petrol and diesel are expensive in Iceland – one liter of regular gasoline costs the equivalent of 2.14 euros. No wonder that more and more Icelanders are switching to electric cars. With kilowatt hours of 30-40 euro cents at public charging points, it’s a bargain compared to Germany. Whether petrol or electric – with over 70 gas stations, Orkan is always the right place in Iceland.

The gas station newcomer took over dusty gas stations and revitalized them with a new concept. Many gas pumps are being replaced by charging points in order to also be relevant for electric car drivers. The classic convenience store is being replaced by well-known coffee shop concepts such as Joe & the Juice. It goes without saying that discount concepts resell gas, diesel, and electricity for very low prices.

From a digital signage perspective, the huge roadside price displays, which are covered with LEDs from ground to top, are remarkable. In addition to displaying the prices of petrol, diesel, and electricity (yes, these are actually displayed with current prices), Orkan also uses the large LED surfaces for animated promotions. A very eye-catching digital signage concept in the winter darkness of Reykjavik.
