Spatial Reality: Sony Adopts Ameria’s Touchfree Technology

Ameria’s Touchfree control system has impressed many integrators and end customers in recent years, but the major breakthrough in the digital signage industry still hadn’t happened. Now, the start-up has found a partner in Sony, creating an immersive HMI concept with Sony’s Spatial Reality Display.

The history of 3D screens in the digital signage industry is as old as the first flat screens 20 years ago. But until now, 3D displays in public spaces have never been very convincing. Sony took up the challenge and delivered: By tapping into the expertise of its photo sensor division and incorporating high-performance graphics cards, the Japanese cult corporation developed the Spatial Reality Display.

It’s the first time a professional display produces 3D effects with convincing depth and stable viewing angles. The technology may not yet be suitable for large DooH applications, but it does seem ready for special B2B applications

Bringing together what belongs together

Heidelberg-based start-up Ameria – known for its touch-free technology – is now combining Sony’s Spatial Reality Display with its own touch-free operating concept. Previously, a 2D cursor was used to interact with the display, which diminished the 3D content’s visual effect. Now, two innovative technologies work together: immersive 3D content on the display is paired with intuitive controls. This creates a 3D space that extends beyond the display, similar to AR glasses, but without the weight and heat.

“In the evolving landscape of digital signage, the collaboration between Ameria’s Touch-free control system and Sony’s Spatial Reality Display marks a pivotal moment. Together, we are not just presenting technology; we are crafting immersive experiences that redefine how we interact with 3D displays in public spaces. As we stand on the brink of a new era, the potential for specialised B2B applications is vast, promising a future where depth and engagement come to life,” comments Yoichiro Hotta, Head of Pan-European Marketing for Professional Displays & Solutions, Sony Europe.

For ISE, which takes place next week in Barcelona, Ameria has developed an application for retailers. Together, Sony and Ameria are also planning to develop special B2B solutions for specific verticals.

“The collaboration between Ameria and Sony is a testament to the power of partnership in innovation. By merging intuitive touch-free technology with immersive 3D displays, they are not just enhancing user interaction; they are unlocking a new dimension of possibilities. This synergy transforms the viewing experience, expanding the 3D space into the real world. We are looking forward to seeing how the partnership evolves in the future where seamless interaction and captivating visuals coexist harmoniously,” continues Yoichiro Hotta.

Johannes Tröger, Senior Vice President at Ameria, also sees great potential in the collaboration: “We are delighted that we have been able to expand our partnership with Sony to include the Spatial Reality Display. 3D content is playing an increasingly important role in many industries, but until now, the right interface has often been missing. VR glasses simply don’t work in many areas. This is exactly and that’s where we, alongside Sony, offer a real solution—not just for retail, but also for sectors like medicine and industry.”
