E Ink Marquee: New E-Paper Display for DooH

Combining the rich color capabilities of Spectra 6 with the outdoor durability of Kaleido, E Ink’s new Marquee technology aims to redefine how e-paper is used outdoors.

E Ink is set to debut a prototype of its latest technology, Marquee, at Touch Taiwan 2025, kicking off on April 16. Marquee is a new e-paper display made for outdoor use, using four color particles—cyan, magenta, yellow, and white—to deliver richer, more vibrant colors.

E Ink already offered an outdoor-friendly option with Kaleido, which combined a black-and-white display with a TFT backlight and color filters. But Marquee takes a different approach. Like Spectra 6, it uses actual colored E Ink particles to create a much broader color range.

Unlike Spectra 6, Marquee is built to handle outdoor weather conditions. Early performance data shows that the panels can operate in temperatures ranging from -20 to +65 degrees Celsius, making them a solid option for DooH applications.

E Ink also plans to offer Marquee displays in sizes up to 75 inches, with a refresh rate between 5 and 7 seconds—making them a good fit for things like outdoor signage and street furniture.

“The future of E Ink is becoming more colorful with our E Ink Marquee innovation,” said Johnson Lee, CEO, E Ink. “E Ink Marquee will be a cornerstone of our organization and define the future of display technology across industries.”

Along with its usual low power consumption, the Marquee panel can run outdoors without the need for cooling systems—something that sets it apart from traditional LCD and LED displays. E Ink sees strong potential for using Marquee in smart street furniture in particular.

There’s no official launch date yet, as E Ink is still working out the roadmap. However, the prototype will also be on display at Display Week in San Jose from May 13 to 15, 2025.
