Microsoft plans to expand the functionality of Windows Update to all apps – supporting software from Microsoft as well as software of 3rd party developers.
IT security depends on current software – outdated OS and software applications are also the Achilles Heel of IT security in the digital signage market. Microsoft now plans to significantly simplify system updates for administrators. In the future, all apps on Windows 11 devices will be able to be kept up-to-date via a “unified, intelligent update orchestration platform.”
In addition to Windows updates, the update functions will also include, for the first time, applications and drivers from third-party providers, such as digital signage CMS platforms. Until now, third-party providers had to use their own update systems.
Using the announced Microsoft Update Orchestration Platform, administrators will be able to install updates when it’s most convenient. Microsoft will schedule updates based on computer activity, the PC’s battery status, and take into account cheaper electricity prices at night. In smart grids, Microsoft also detects bright breezes, times when plenty of wind and sun ensure high power generation from wind and solar systems, while electricity consumption is low, which can lead to low or even negative electricity prices.
Relevance for digital signage and SoC
Since SoC systems are frequently used in the digital signage industry, the question arises as to the extent to which Samsung, LG, and others should offer similar integrated update solutions supporting third-party app update functions.
End users, digital signage integrators, and software providers would certainly welcome simple and secure update functionality on SoC platforms. But according to Lukas Danek, CPO of SignageOS, the problem in the digital signage market lies elsewhere. “SoCs are embedded systems that often run only a few dedicated apps. The functions of a complex update platform cannot be fully utilized in digital signage applications.”
Much more important for SoC manufacturers in the digital signage industry is a fundamental change towards regular update policies. Unlike in the IT industry – digital signage SoC manufactures provide firmware, system and browser engines updates only at long intervals.
