BOE at ISE: Innovation Made in China

Barcelona | From Chip-on-Glass to MicroOLED – the real future technologies at ISE can be seen at original equipment manufacturer BOE. But China is also aware of European trends and is prioritizing green signage

As one of the largest LCD manufacturers, BOE is behind the majority of digital signage displays that can be seen at ISE. At its own booth, however, the OEM has long been exhibits more than just simple display panels, but also complete solutions, software, and LEDs.

In recent years, the Chinese manufacturer has expanded its portfolio particularly in the LED sector. Technologies ranging from SMD to chip-on-board (COB) and chip-on-glass (COG) take up almost half of the ISE booth. BOE sees its future especially in the COG sector, showcasing a rare panel specimen at the trade fair.

COB with ever lower power consumption

While chip-on-glass won’t be market-ready for a few years, COB LED shipments are rapidly increasing, especially in Europe. The focus is now on optimizing energy consumption, which is a key concern in the European market. At ISE, BOE highlights this with a small display next to a large LED wall, showing real-time energy consumption. Viewers can see how it increases with content that containts a higher proportion of white.

Recycling share of all panels increases

In addition to energy efficiency, BOE is increasingly focusing on recycling. The production methods have been adapted to allow for a greater use of recycled materials in display panel production. The proportion is gradually increasing, as shown by an interactive whiteboard (IWB) for schools and conference rooms at ISE, which already contains 20% recycled materials.

For the Chinese market, BOE is also showcasing an entirely different educational solution: an interactive whiteboard that switches between 2D and 3D mode when students wear 3D glasses. This would probably not sell well in Europe.

Turnkey collaboration displays with Qualcomm chips

Those turnkey solutions are finding their way more and more into the offering of traditional panel manufacturers. BOE, for instance, collaborates directly with US tech giants such as Microsoft and Qualcomm. The newest example at ISE is a conference room display with integrated, tracking-capable cameras based on the latest Qualcomm chip. The solution is not quite ready for the market yet, but it shows the direction in which BOE is heading.

AI software for video restoration

In the AI sector, BOE does not want to leave the field entirely to the Samsungs and LGs of this world either. At ISE, it is presenting AI software designed to restore old video and audio material. This software is planned to be available independently of BOE’s hardware.

Another highlight at the trade show is a tiny, high-resolution MicroOLED panel that can be viewed through glasses. Due to its high resolution and the associated high price, it is primarily designed for scientific applications, such as in microscopes. For those, BOE has has already found a German manufacturer as an interested party.
