India: Luxury mall meets Bollywood

Mumbai | The heart of the Indian film industry beats in Bombay. invidis was on the road with Indian experts in the mega-metropolis in search of cinema, digital signage and the longing for big pictures. Mumbai offers everything and so much more.

The chaos of Mumbai robs you of your senses: the streets are overcrowded, life in public spaces demands a lot from first time visitors. The real life in the 20 million population metropolis takes place beyond the Infocomm India exhibition halls – on roads, in stores and in movie theaters.

Luxury mall with a cinema on the roof

The newly opened Jio World Drive shopping center is one of the best shopping addresses in Mumbai. Apple opened its first store in India here in April 2023. Many luxury brands are represented with flagship stores in the ultra-modern mall in the BKC business district.

But Mumbai wouldn’t be Mumbai if Bollywood and cinema didn’t play an important role here. The land on which Jio World Drive is locates today and where Apple sells smartphones and Armani luxury fashion, used to be a drive-in cinema. Local building regulations stipulate that cinemas must continue to operate even if the land is repurposed for shopping malls or other use cases.

At Jio, they decided not only to integrate an exclusive multiplex cinema into the shopping mall, but also to build a drive-in open air cinema on the top parking deck. It’s a special experience to watch Bollywood classics in the dark with a view over the Mumbai Bay.
