Carrefour Israel is rolling out 4,000 smart shopping carts to unlock retail media, personalize the in-store journey, and turn the trolley into a high-margin touchpoint.

Retail Media: Carrefour Israel Deploys 4,000 Smart Carts
Carrefour Israel is gearing up for a major retail media rollout – but instead of relying on traditional in-store displays, the retailer is betting on smart carts. Supplied by Isreali tech firm A2Z Cust2Mate Solutions, these high-tech shopping carts are equipped with screens, sensors, and advanced connectivity. With plans to deploy 4,000 units, Carrefour Israel is among the first retailers to introduce the technology at scale.
Integrated Multi-Use Touchscreen
Each smart cart features a 13.3-inch touchscreen and an integrated barcode scanner. Connected via Wi-Fi to a cloud-based platform, the system analyzes shopper behavior and integrates with retail media networks. This enables Carrefour to guide customers through the store via the cart’s screen while delivering personalized advertising. The Cust2Mate models also support direct payment at the cart.
$35 million Extra Profit
Carrefour expects the initiative to generate profits of around US$35 million. “Deployment of the Cust2mate Smart Carts in our stores will grant our shoppers an improved shopper experience, enabling them to enjoy personalized and targeted promotions and a quicker checkout, increasing the same store year on year sales, and improving our operational efficiency, resulting in profits estimated at an additional tens of millions of dollars,” says Michael Luboschitz, CEO of Carrefour Israel.
The rollout is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year, initially covering six flagship stores. Beyond hardware, the partnership also includes data analytics, retail media, and digital services.
The agreement between Cust2Mate and Carrefour is set for five years and represents a total value of approximately US$50 million.
