New York City | Speculation about the future of ChromeOS intensified after Google announced plans to migrate the operating system to an Android-based tech stack, internally known as Aluminium OS. Many in the digital signage industry feared this move signalled the end of the B2B operating systek. However, Google has made it clear that ChromeOS is not going anywhere.

Signage: Google Reaffirms ChromeOS Commitment
In an interview with Chrome Unboxed, Google emphasized that ChromeOS remains a core part of its strategy, serving millions of users across education, enterprise, and consumer markets. With such widespread adoption, discontinuing the professional platform would be disruptive for businesses and institutions that rely on it daily.
10-year support commitment unchanged
Concerns have also risen around Google’s promise to provide 10 years of automatic updates for ChromeOS devices. Despite the upcoming transition to the Android stack, Google confirmed that this commitment remains unchanged. Devices will continue to receive updates for the full support period, ensuring long-term reliability for current hardware investments.
Migration to Aluminium OS
Not all existing ChromeOS devices will be able to migrate to the new Android-based foundation due to performance limitations. However, Google plans to enable migration for many newer models where feasible. Devices that cannot transition will still benefit from the same support timeline, maintaining continuity for users.
The move to an Android-based architecture is designed to modernize ChromeOS, enabling faster development cycles and improved integration of AI capabilities. For digital signage – ChromeOS and ChromeOS flex – will therefore remain a safe investment with the upside potential for a future transition to Aluminium OS.
