Professional IoT-Platforms like Samsung Smartthings Pro are becoming more important for the digital signage industry. Interacting with users and the space surrounding the digital signage platform is relevant for engaging experiences and personal customer journeys. Many IoT platforms are based on Matter, a global standard for IoT. The latest Matter update provides many new features relevant for digital signage.

Matter 1.5: New IoT-Standard for Cameras & Energy Management
The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has released Matter 1.5, the latest update to the IoT and smart home interoperability standard – and this one is a big step forward. While previous updates were relatively minor, Matter 1.5 introduces long-awaited support for cameras, new energy management capabilities, and expanded device categories.
Cameras Finally Join the Matter Ecosystem
Perhaps the most anticipated addition, cameras now have native Matter support via WebRTC. This includes indoor and outdoor cameras including PTZ models, regardless of whether they use Wi-Fi, PoE, or Ethernet. Developers can integrate cameras or vision sensors for analytics without proprietary APIs, simplifying deployment. Most modern cameras already meet the technical requirements for the new Matter certification.
Intelligent Energy Management
Energy optimization is another major focus. Matter devices can now exchange standardized data on energy prices, tariffs, and grid carbon intensity, enabling real-time and predictive automation to reduce costs and emissions. Smart meters gain extended support for reporting consumption.
Most importantly, Matter 1.5 improves data transport with TCP support, ensuring reliable transfer of large datasets – critical for bandwidth-heavy devices like cameras.
