Singapore | In a move towards inclusive digital signage, Singapore’s innovative Sign Language Virtual Assistant (Silvia) is set to expand beyond Southeast Asia. Developed by SBS Transit in collaboration with Pantheon Lab (Hong Kong), Silvia will be adapted to Emirati sign language and piloted at Abu Dhabi's new railway system.

Sign-Language Signage: Silvia Goes Global
Silvia is an AI-powered assistant designed to bridge communication gaps for deaf and hard-of-hearing commuters. By translating spoken or typed queries into sign language, Silvia enables users to navigate public transport systems independently, confidently, and safely. The sign language digital signage concept was recognized as one of the top three winners of the Global Rail 2025 Innovation Awards, selected from over 240 international submissions.
In the world of digital signage, accessibility is often an afterthought. By integrating Silvia into touchscreens and kiosk totems, static information is transformed into dynamic, barrier-free interaction – making public transport more equitable and user-friendly.

Next Stop: UAE
Silvia’s journey continues in the Middle East, where Etihad Rail and Singapore’s SBS Transit are partnering to localize the assistant for the UAE. This includes adapting Silvia to Emirati Sign Language and customizing her appearance and behavior to reflect the cultural context of the region.
A pilot deployment is planned for a station in Abu Dhabi, where Silvia will be integrated with Etihad Rail’s passenger information systems. Commuters will receive real-time updates on train schedules, platform changes, and travel advisories – all delivered in sign language via digital signage.
