Sustainability in digital signage is no longer a marketing checkbox – it’s a strategic shift happening across product development and supply chains. The industry is quietly transforming beneath the surface. An op-ed by Florian Rotberg explores how manufacturers, integrator, and end-users must embrace sustainability as a mindset – not a sticker.

Opinion: The Silent Sustainability Revolution in Digital Signage
Sustainability and resilience in digital signage are no longer optional – they are strategic imperatives. For too long, our industry has equated sustainability with energy efficiency alone, chasing the low-hanging fruit of power consumption metrics and eco-labels. But the real transformation is happening behind the scenes – in product development, material science, and supply chain strategy. Just as BASF’s heavy-metal-free QD materials and BMW’s rare-earth-free motors signal a shift in mindset, digital signage must embrace a deeper, more systemic approach to sustainability.
The future of signage is being shaped by decisions made long before a screen is powered on. From e-paper displays and AI-on-device to green software initiatives and lifecycle management, manufacturers are beginning to rethink everything – from the resin in enclosures to the algorithms driving content. The race for ever-higher resolution has slowed, giving way to smarter, more efficient technologies. Even MicroLED, once seen as a power-hungry marvel, is evolving toward greater efficiency. But LED remains the Achilles heel of our industry – one we must address with urgency and innovation.
This is a call to action for the entire ecosystem – manufacturers, integrators, and end-users alike. Sustainability and resilience must be embedded into every layer of the value chain, not just marketed as a feature. It requires investment, collaboration, and transparency. The good news? Progress is happening. The challenge? We need to talk about it. As consultants, partners, and thought leaders, we must help the industry understand that true sustainability is not a sticker – it’s a mindset. And it’s time we made it our default setting.
