Mooink V: E Ink’s First Foldable

Seven years after the debut of the first foldable smartphone, the first foldable e-reader using e-paper is hitting the market. E Ink developed it in partnership with Readmoo and named it the Mooink V.

E-paper maker E Ink is showcasing a whole range of new products at Touch Taiwan which started on Wednesday and runs until Friday. Among the highlights were the first 75-inch Spectra 6 display, the new Marquee DooH display technology, and the ripple waveform architecture that eliminates the page flashing typical for e-paper. E Ink also introduced its first foldable device at the event—the Mooink V, an 8-inch color e-reader that folds in half.

Foldable e-paper has been popping up in prototype form for years. The technology behind it—E Ink Gallery 3—was first introduced by the company two years ago. Now, the Mooink V, developed in collaboration with Readmoo, is the first commercial device to use Gallery 3.

Its 8-inch screen is about 25% larger than the latest Kindle’s, but it also weighs more—255 grams, nearly 40% heavier. E Ink shared a first look at the device in a demo video.

According to CEO Johnson Lee, developing the Mooink V was a long journey—foldable e-paper was first demonstrated nearly 19 years ago, making this a breakthrough two decades in the making.

Johnson Lee showed off the Mooink V on LinkedIn, holding the device on the very first day of Touch Taiwan. E Ink also plans to demo it again next month at SID Display Week in California.
