With the launch of the Kindle Colorsoft, Amazon introduces its first e-reader with a color display. For the digital signage industry, this means that prices for e-paper displays could fall.
Amazon recently announced its first Kindle with a color display, the so-called Kindle Colorsoft. In addition to several new Kindle versions, it is the first model to be based on E Ink’s Kaleido technology, which is also suitable for digital signage displays, for example for DooH.
According to the tech portal The Verge, Amazon uses a completely new display design for this device. It includes a newly developed oxide backplane, which enables the tiny ink particles in the e-ink panel to move faster. This leads to an improved refresh rate, which speeds up page turns. In addition, each pixel is illuminated individually, which produces more vivid colors.
Thanks to these technological developments, Amazon now considers the technology mature enough for mass production in Kindle devices. This could also impact the digital signage industry, as there are currently no suppliers offering color e-paper displays at a price that allows for a quick return on investment. However, Amazon’s large order with E Ink may change this – at least with regard to the outdoor-compatible Kaleido technology.
