Adele’s LED: Who’s Behind the Record-Breaking Screen

Munich | The construction of the temporary Adele Arena hasn’t been credited to any AV service provider yet. However, after some inquiries, we discovered that the world’s largest LED was built using ROE panels from Solotech.

Adele’s Arena in Munich, custom-built for ten exclusive concerts this August, is currently home to what seems to be the largest event LED in the world. Official information about the suppliers and service providers behind it is still scarce. As usual, any involved parties probably agreed with concert promoter Live Nation to refrain from doing PR with the project.

However, based on the information available in the market, the following is certain:

LED from ROE, supplied by Solotech

As the AV partner of Adele’s Arena, it is Solotech who supplied the hardware for the approximately 4,000 square meter LED wall. Solotech, a world leader in the touring business, has previously supported Adele’s “Adele in Residence” concerts in Las Vegas and is currently also supporting Taylor Swift’s two-year Eras world tour.

Social media posts indicate that 700 employees worked together to set up the oversized LED wall in Munich. This wall is the centerpiece of the stadium built specifically for Adele in a parking lot at Messe Munich, which was constructed over the course of two months.

Largest single order of LED panels

The LED used is likely an ROE CB5 Mark II, an event SMD with a pixel pitch of 5.77mm. In early May, Solotech and ROE jointly announced the world’s largest LED order, with Solotech purchasing over 5,000 square meters of LED tiles, including 4,500 square meters of identical carbon LED panels. According to Solotech and Unilumin subsidiary ROE, this was the world’s largest single order of LEDs from a single batch. Renting such a large quantity of LEDs secretly is impossible, especially with the Summer Olympics happening in Paris simultaneously.

Information on the exact size of the LED wall varies somewhat: it is said to be around 220 meters wide, with a height between 17 and 30 meters. Calculating with a width of 222 meters and a height of 18 meters, the surface area would be 3,996 square meters, requiring 4,625 square meters of ROE CB5 Mark II cabinets, ending in convex towers at both ends of the stage, a design that is supposed to resemble a gigantic analog film reel.

The power requirement for such a vast LED surface is significant. With an average consumption of over 1,100 kilowatts – 240 watts per cabinet – more than a standard power supply is needed to illuminate the 4,000 square meters of LED.

Stage design by Stufish Limited

The stage in front of the screen is a 93-meter-long catwalk with a 200-meter-long semi-circular walkway. The design appears to have been created by entertainment architects Stufish Limited.

Official details still to be expected

We are confident that after the Adele residency in Munich concludes in September, many of the partners involved will be able to share details about the LED. By then, the world record for the mega screen should also be officially confirmed.
