In collaboration with Saint-Gobain Sekurit, LG Electronics has developed a transparent film antenna that can be attached directly to glass. The solution was developed for automotive, but is also particularly interesting for digital signage and DooH installations.
LG Electronics presents a transparent antenna for automotive applications at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. LG’s transparent film antenna, which is applied directly to the vehicle glass, was developed in collaboration with the French glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Sekurit.
LG’s transparent antenna is designed to be compatible with various glass types and vehicle designs and will be available as an on-glass or in-glass solution. The large-scale use of the film antenna ensures reliable reception performance – 5G, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and Wi-Fi are supported.
The transparent antenna can be seamlessly integrated into car windshields or sliding glass roofs. This means that vehicle manufacturers do not have to compromise on design when developing new models, as the housings typically used to house traditional antennas are eliminated. The film antenna features more than 80 of LG’s patented innovations, including the design ability to make antenna patterns transparent and transparent electrode technology.
Also interesting for digital signage and DooH
Transparent antennas are also an interesting application for outdoor and indoor displays. To this day, many steles, kiosk systems and digital signage installations are equipped with ugly stubby antennas. Alternatively, antennas are hidden on the back of media players or displays – often with modest reception quality.
LG has not yet announced whether and when the automotive solution will also be available for ProAV.
