Cybersecurity: Stay Secure, Stay Protected!

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and DooH is again in the spotlight. Operating and keeping endpoints and systems secure and protected is vital for business critical systems like digital signage and DooH. Qatari DooH media owner Elan Media and the National Cyber Security Agency are spreading the word across the country.

The cost of a data breach continues to rise every year as new attack methods, new vulnerabilities, and new risks appear. According to IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2023, the average cost of a data breach in that year was 4.45 million US dollars.

Traditionally, the digital signage and DooH industry has been lagging behind in securing and protecting their IT infrastructure. For years, these systems operated in isolation, often on dedicated networks, with cybersecurity not being a priority.

But times have changed: today, signage and DooH networks are connected to multiple backend systems, sharing the IT infrastructure with many business critical applications. Yet, IT security certifications like ISO 27001 are still rare in the industry, with many players hoping the simpler SoC2 certification will suffice.

Some software vendors have already lost enterprise clients after repeatedly failing new-generation penetration tests. Simply completing a questionnaire is no longer enough; end customers and their cybersecurity insurers now expect full compliance. Without it, vendors risk being banned from the network.

Since 2004, the Cybersecurity Awareness Month initiative has highlighted the importance of safeguarding our digital landscape. Many countries are promoting cybersecurity this month, such as the Qatar National Cyber Security Agency, which is spreading the message across Doha on Elan Media screens.
