More and more e-paper solutions hit the market – not only in Europe but also globally, as Infocomm India 2023 showed. The trend will continue at ISE 2024.
One of the trending topics at the upcoming ISE will be e-paper signage. PPDS is now forging ahead with the announcement of the first full-color 32-inch e-paper display with integrated Android SoC. Other visual solution providers will be presenting their own e-paper solutions at ISE. The time is ripe for energy-efficient displays as an alternative to LCD.
Even in Asia, where sustainability is far less relevant than in Europe, e-papers are the topic of the moment. At Infocomm India this year, numerous exhibitors showed dozens of different e-paper signage solutions for application scenarios ranging from room signage and wayguiding to retail. Even though very few of the e-paper displays on show are equipped with professional SoCs like Philips, the wide range of energy-saving e-paper displays is surprising.
E-paper signage solutions are interesting from several perspectives: for Europe, the enormously energy-efficient operation compared to LCD and LED simplifies the transformation towards net-zero for end customers. In India, the focus was on simple installation and battery operation without a power connection.
Large-scale use of the big brothers of the booming electronic shelf labels (ESL) category is now realistic since providers such as Philips have integrated a standardized SoC platform that supports the operation of established digital signage CMS such as Telelogos or Grassfish.
Furthermore, e-paper signage solutions must also be able to be monitored and managed via established remote device management solutions for business-critical deployment scenarios.
In addition to AI, platforms (CMS, remote device management) and MicroLED, e-paper signage will also be the big trend topic at ISE 2024.
