DooH: Much More than Just a Plain LED Screen

Munich | Clever solutions are still too rare in the digital signage and DooH industry. Terminal 2 at Munich Airport, a joint venture of Munich Airport and Lufthansa, demonstrates what smart DooH solutions could look like.

Munich Airport is one of the few major airports worldwide which did not outsource DooH networks to third parties like JC Decaux. The advantage is that Munich can develop screen solutions that integrate into the individual architecture of the airport. An outstanding example are two new LED displays at the central security checkpoint entrance in Terminal 2.

The two fine-pixel LED displays – hand-felt COB – have been amended with an ambient LED frame. This creates a dynamic display area that’s about one-third larger than the screen itself, attracting more attention and adding a stylish touch. The surrounding LED lights adjust to the on-screen content, similar to Ambilight technology.

The colour algorithm is still in learning mode a few days after installation, but with the help of AI, colour adjustments should be even more precise and faster in the future.

Typical for Munich Airport is the high-quality construction of the LED cabinet, including the service doors on the rear. A “masterpiece” of engineering rarely seen. Munich Airport authority is known to custom-develop many business critical IT solutions instead of relying on off-the-rack solutions. It’s hard to imagine that the world’s largest airport marketing company, JC Decaux, would roll out such elaborately crafted totems.

The new LEDs are a real eye-catcher, and they’re sure to attract the attention of T2 passengers. The digital signage industry will be able to experience the new LEDs first-hand at the end of May (May 21-23), when hundreds of experts from around the world will once again travel to the Munich Airport Hilton for DSS Europe 2025.
